Christiana Mall

Enclosed Regional Shopping Mall At The Junction Of Interstate 95 And Delaware Route 1 Near Newark, Opened In 1978, In A State With No Sales Tax · Newark, Delaware

Christiana Mall is the biggest enclosed shopping mall in Delaware, set beside the interchange of Interstate 95 and Route 1 at Christiana, just east of Newark. It opened in 1978 and has been expanded and refitted several times since. As a building it is an ordinary American regional mall: two levels of chain stores, department-store anchors such as Macy's and Nordstrom (the latter opened in 2014), a Target, an Apple store, a food court and sit-down restaurants around the edge, and big free parking lots all round; confirm the current tenants, since anchors change. What makes it a destination is the law, not the architecture. Delaware has no sales tax, so a phone, a laptop, a winter coat or a pile of school clothes costs what the price tag says, and shoppers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland drive in for exactly that, above all before the school year and in December. Expect crowds, heavy traffic on Route 1 and I-95 at weekends and in the holiday season, and a separate strip of big-box stores across the road. It is a mall; the tax is the reason to come.

132 Christiana Mall, Newark, Delaware, 19702, United States

The mall keeps ordinary retail hours, typically opening mid-morning and closing in the evening from Monday to Saturday, with shorter hours on Sunday; confirm the current schedule. Anchor department stores, Target and some restaurants set their own hours, often opening earlier or closing later than the mall corridors, and restaurants with outside entrances may stay open after the shops close. The mall is closed or on very short hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter in most years, and hours extend in the weeks before Christmas and on the day after Thanksgiving. Saturday afternoons, the late-summer back-to-school weeks and the whole of December are the busiest, with full lots and slow traffic on Route 1, I-95 and the approach roads. Weekday mornings are the quietest. Individual stores sometimes close early for inventory or have limited hours, and the Apple store and some popular shops may require appointments for repairs or pickups. Parking is free and there is no ticketed entry; mall walkers use the corridors early on some mornings.
