Denmark'S Easternmost Inhabited Islands, A 17th Century Naval Fortress And Village Of About 90 People With No Cars, Reached By Boat From Gudhjem · Christianso, Capital Region of Denmark

Christianso is the main island of Ertholmene, a tiny cluster of granite islets in the Baltic roughly 18-20 km north-east of Bornholm and the easternmost inhabited part of Denmark. In 1684 King Christian V turned the rocks into a naval fortress to watch the Swedish coast, and the walls, bastions, cannon, powder stores and two round towers still stand, now wrapped around a small village of yellow and red houses where roughly 90 people live all year. Christianso and its sister island Frederikso are joined by a footbridge over the little harbour; the third island, Graesholm, is a bird reserve closed to visitors. There are no cars, no roads in the usual sense and very little noise beyond gulls and the sea. People come on a day trip by boat from Gudhjem for the fortress, the nesting eiders that sit calmly beside the paths, the rock pools, the pickled herring and the feeling of standing at the edge of the country. The honest caveat: the crossing is roughly an hour each way in open sea, it is weather dependent and can be rough, beds are very few, and off season there is little open.

The islands are always there, but visiting depends entirely on the boat. From roughly May to September there are daily sailings from Gudhjem, and at times in high summer also from Allinge, usually giving day visitors roughly 3-4 hours on the island; off season the boat runs on a reduced pattern, often weekdays only as the mail boat, with shorter visits or an overnight needed. All sailings are weather dependent and can be cancelled at short notice in strong wind - confirm the timetable the day before and again on the morning. Book boat tickets ahead in July and August, and book any overnight room or tent pitch weeks or months ahead. The museum in the Little Tower and the island inn and shop keep seasonal hours - confirm they are open.
