The Largest Timber Framed Religious Building In Europe, Built 1656 1657 Under The Peace Of Westphalia For Lutherans Who Were Not Allowed Stone, Steeples Or Bells. Holds Several Thousand Worshippers Inside A Wood, Clay And Straw Frame · Swidnica, Lower Silesian

The Church of Peace in Swidnica is the largest timber-framed religious building in Europe and a UNESCO site listed in 2001, together with its sister church at Jawor. It was built in 1656 and 1657 for the local Lutherans, after the Peace of Westphalia, under harsh terms: the wood, clay and straw frame had to go up within a year, with no stone, no steeple and no bells, and outside the town walls. The plain exterior hides a surprise. Inside, several thousand worshippers were seated on tiers of painted wooden balconies, and the pulpit, altar, ceilings and organ are covered in baroque paintings and carving. The church is still a working Lutheran parish. It stands a short walk from the Market Square, in a quiet churchyard, and is reached by rail on the Krakow-Wroclaw line, about an hour from Wroclaw. The building is large rather than ornate outside, and the visit itself is short, so pair it with the old town or with Jawor to fill a day.

The church is commonly open to visitors daily, including at weekends, but it is closed to sightseers during worship services and for weddings, concerts or private events, especially on Sunday mornings. Hours are usually shorter in winter and may include a midday pause, so a late-afternoon arrival can find it shut. The churchyard and exterior are free to see at all times. Entry inside is normally paid with a ticket, and a guided or audio option may exist. Organ concerts run on set evenings in season and have their own tickets. Confirm times, closing days and service hours close to your date.
