Church Street Marketplace
Promenade · Burlington, Vermont
Four blocks of downtown Burlington closed to cars and given over to shops, restaurants, buskers and outdoor tables - a pedestrian mall of the kind American cities built enthusiastically from the late 1960s and then almost entirely abandoned. Most of them were reopened to traffic or died. This one worked, and it has kept working for decades, which is why it is an American Planning Association Great Public Space and why planners come to look at it. For a visitor it is simply the centre of Burlington and the place you end up in the evening.
2 Church Street, Burlington, Vermont, 05401, United States
The street is open at all times and FREE - it is a public pedestrian street, not a ticketed attraction, and walking it, the buskers and the atmosphere cost nothing. Individual shops, restaurants and bars keep their own hours; ⚠ SEVERAL CLOSE EARLIER ON SUNDAYS AND THROUGH THE WINTER, and the street changes character after about nine in the evening from a family space to a student and bar street. ⚠ PARKING IS PAID GARAGES AND ENFORCED METERED STREET PARKING around the marketplace and it fills on summer evenings - the garages are the sensible answer. Cycling is restricted on the marketplace itself; use the racks. The Lake Champlain waterfront is a short walk downhill, and the walk back up is a genuine hill.
