Cimarron National Grassland

National Grassland · Elkhart, Kansas

A hundred and eight thousand acres in the far south-west corner of Kansas, and the largest tract of public land in the state — shortgrass prairie, sand sage and the usually dry bed of the Cimarron River, all of it land the federal government bought back in the 1930s after the Dust Bowl ruined the farms that had ploughed it. Twenty-three miles of the Santa Fe Trail cross it, which is the longest publicly owned stretch of that trail anywhere, and the wagon ruts are still there.
