Cincinnati Observatory

Observatory · Cincinnati, Ohio

The birthplace of American astronomy — the first public observatory in the Western Hemisphere, paid for by public subscription in the 1840s when a professor sold shares in the sky to Cincinnati citizens at twenty-five dollars each. John Quincy Adams, aged seventy-six, travelled here to lay the cornerstone in what became the last major public address of his life.

Public observing nights, daytime tours and classes run on a published schedule and are booked in advance. OBSERVING IS WEATHER-DEPENDENT and cancels for cloud; building tours usually still run.
