Royal Palace Of The Kachwaha Dynasty; Part Of The UNESCO Listed Walled City Of Jaipur · Jaipur, Rajasthan

The palace of the Kachwaha rulers in the heart of Jaipur's walled city, built from 1727 when Sawai Jai Singh II founded the city, and still partly the home of the former royal family: a flag flies over the Chandra Mahal when the head of the family is in residence. The public part is a museum of courtyards and halls in pink and cream. The Mubarak Mahal holds royal textiles and costumes, the armoury holds weapons, and the Diwan-i-Khas holds two enormous silver urns, among the largest silver objects in the world, which Maharaja Madho Singh II had made to carry Ganges water to London in 1902 so that he would not have to drink English water. The Pitam Niwas Chowk has four painted doorways representing the seasons, the peacock gate the most photographed. Tours into the private rooms of the Chandra Mahal are sold separately at a high price. The palace is run by the family's trust and is not on the Jaipur composite ticket. Jantar Mantar, the stone observatory, is next door, and the Hawa Mahal a short walk away.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED; confirm before planning. The usual pattern: the palace museum opens daily from about 9:30 am to about 5 pm, with last tickets shortly before closing, and it has also run occasional evening or night visits. The Chandra Mahal tour runs in timed slots. Holi, Diwali and family events can close parts of the palace at short notice. Jantar Mantar next door keeps separate state monument hours. Arriving after 11 am in season means crowds and heat.
