Civic Opera House

Opera House · Chicago, Illinois

Samuel Insull's opera house on the river, opened in November 1929 six days after the Wall Street Crash, and built into the base of a forty-five-storey office block whose shape gives it its nickname — from the west it looks like a throne, facing away from the city that Insull felt had slighted him. The auditorium seats 3,563, which makes it the second largest opera house in North America.
