County History Museum With A Timeline Gallery And Heritage Street, A Row Of Historic Houses Moved From Around Southern Nevada · Henderson, Nevada

The Clark County Museum is the county's history museum, on Boulder Highway in Henderson, about 25 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip on the way to Boulder City and Hoover Dam. It is small, inexpensive and one of the best places to learn the story of southern Nevada that the casinos leave out. An exhibit hall walks through the valley's history as a timeline, from ancient peoples and the Southern Paiute through the Mormon fort, the railroad town of 1905, the building of Hoover Dam, wartime magnesium works that created Henderson and atomic testing, to the Strip. Outside, Heritage Street is a row of real houses and buildings from around the county, dating from about the 1910s to the 1950s, moved here and furnished for their era, with a railroad depot, a caboose and other relics along a desert path. It is a local county museum, not a showpiece, and the outdoor walk is hot in summer; but for an hour or two it gives Las Vegas a past, and it combines easily with Boulder City and the dam.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the museum usually opens daily from about 9 am to about 4:30 pm, with last entry earlier, and Heritage Street may close before the main building. It commonly closes on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, and individual houses may be closed on any day. The traps that ruin a day are arriving mid-afternoon in summer when the outdoor walk is dangerously hot, arriving near closing and finding Heritage Street shut, visiting on a holiday closure, and expecting every house to be open. Confirm current times before relying on them.
