Clark County Wetlands Park

County Park And Nature Preserve Along The Las Vegas Wash On The East Side Of The Valley, With A Nature Center · Las Vegas, Nevada

Clark County Wetlands Park is a large county park and nature preserve on the east side of the Las Vegas valley, along the Las Vegas Wash, the channel that carries the valley's treated wastewater, runoff and storm water towards Lake Mead. Where there was once an eroding gully, the county and its partners built weirs, ponds and marsh, a strip of cattails, willows and open water startling in the Mojave. A modern Nature Center with exhibits about the valley's water and wildlife anchors the park, and from it boardwalks and trails lead over ponds and through the marsh, while longer paved and dirt trails follow the Wash for walkers, runners and cyclists. It is one of the best places in the city to see water birds such as herons and egrets, plus desert birds, lizards and, at dawn, coyotes. It is a local park rather than a headline sight: there is no swimming, summer heat is intense and mosquitoes can be bad. It is worth a morning for birders, families and anyone needing a break from the Strip, and pairs well with Henderson, Lake Las Vegas and Lake Mead further east.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the park's trails and car parks are open daily from around dawn to dusk, with gates locked outside those hours, while the Nature Center building keeps shorter daytime hours, roughly mid morning to mid afternoon, and closes on some days of the week and on major holidays. Some trails may close after storms for flooding or debris and some areas close seasonally for nesting or work. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at midday in summer when it is too hot to walk, driving out on a day the Nature Center is closed, finding the gate locked after dusk with the car inside, and bringing a dog to the preserve paths where dogs are banned. Confirm current times before relying on them.
