Claytor Lake State Park

Virginia State Park On Claytor Lake, Impounded From The New River In 1939; Includes The Howe House Of About 1876 · Dublin, Virginia

Four hundred and seventy acres of shoreline park on Claytor Lake, a twenty-one-mile impoundment created when Appalachian Power dammed the New River in 1939 - which makes the water here rather older than it looks and rather more interesting than a reservoir usually is, because the New is among the oldest rivers on the continent. Unlike the small CCC park lakes elsewhere in this batch, Claytor is big, open water with no horsepower restriction, so this is where Virginia state park visitors go when they actually want to water-ski, tube or run a powerboat, and the park has the marina, the ramp and the slips to support it. There is a sand swimming beach with a bath house, cabins and a campground on the bluff above, and a good deal of quiet shoreline trail that nobody uses because they are all on the water. The park also keeps the Howe House, a brick farmhouse of about 1876 that predates the lake by sixty years and now holds the visitor centre and the local history exhibits.
