Clear Lake State Park

State Park · Kelseyville, California

Clear Lake State Park sits on the shore of Clear Lake in Lake County, near Kelseyville, about two to three hours north of San Francisco. Clear Lake is often described as the largest natural freshwater lake lying entirely within California, and Mount Konocti, a volcano, rises across the water. The park has a campground along a creek - confirm the name and size - a swimming beach, a boat launch, picnic areas and a short nature trail. The lake is shallow and warm, which makes it good for bass and catfish fishing, boating and water-skiing, and it also means summer algae blooms and heavy insect hatches. Check health advisories before swimming. Summers are hot, and the area suits campers, anglers and families who like lake days, but it is not a clear-water alpine lake. Expect warm, greenish water, a relaxed pace and a lot of shore life, and plan around the heat by visiting early or late in the day.

California State Parks has generally run Clear Lake as a day-use park from around sunrise until sunset, with the campground on its own check-in and check-out times and the boat launch sometimes open longer - confirm the hours, the day-use fee and the booking rules for campsites. Summer weekends fill the lots and campground, and algae advisories can close the swimming beach or limit water contact at any time of year, mostly in late summer. Lake levels also change with the season and drought. Check the State Parks page and the county health advisory on the day you plan to go.
