Clearwater River Provincial Park

A Canadian Heritage River With Limestone Cliffs, Sandy Beaches And Clear Water On The Way To The Athabasca Country, With White Water And Flatwater Canoeing, Fishing And The Cree And Dene History Of The Region. A Remote Canoe Park Reached By Long Gravel Roads And Guides · La Loche, Saskatchewan

Clearwater River Provincial Park protects a wild stretch of the Clearwater River in the far north-west of Saskatchewan, close to the Alberta border and the Dene community of La Loche. The river is a Canadian Heritage River, cutting a deep valley through boreal forest with steep banks, sandy beaches and clear, tea-coloured water over rock and gravel, and its rapids and falls make it one of the best canoe routes in the province. For centuries it was part of the fur trade highway, linked to the Methy Portage, which carried canoes from the Churchill River country to the Arctic watershed (confirm length and status). Highway 955 reaches the river at Warner Rapids, where there is a campground and boat access (confirm), and from there paddlers set out on trips of several days. Black bears, wolves, moose and bald eagles live along the valley. The park is remote, so supplies, fuel and good planning matter.

The park is open all year, but services are limited and seasonal. The campground at Warner Rapids and the boat access are normally used from about late May to September, when the road is dry and the river is free of ice, so confirm dates before you travel. There is no staffed gate or posted daily hours that I can confirm, and facilities are basic. Highway 955 is partly gravel and can be rough after rain or snow.
