Clifton Suspension Bridge crosses the Avon Gorge between Clifton in Bristol and Leigh Woods in North Somerset. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's design was chosen in 1831 but the bridge opened in 1864, after his death in 1859. The span is about 214 m and the deck stands about 75 m above the river at high tide, which makes the view down the gorge the main reason to come. It is free on foot, and vehicles pay a small toll, so confirm the current charge. It is a short visit, not a day out: walk across, read the panels at a visitor centre, look down at the muddy Avon and perhaps add the Avon Gorge walk and Clifton Observatory. It suits families, engineering fans and anyone wandering Bristol. It is busier on sunny weekends and the Bristol Balloon Fiesta in August, and the view from the deck is better than the deck is wide. Safety barriers and signs offering support are in place on the bridge, and are there for care. Some events close the bridge, so check first.

Suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge between Clifton in Bristol and Leigh Woods in North Somerset, with a visitor centre on the Clifton side and pedestrian walkways on both sides of the roadway, Bristol, England, United Kingdom

The bridge itself is open to pedestrians at all hours and is free, with walkways on both sides of the roadway. Vehicles pay a small toll, which may be collected electronically, so confirm the current method and charge. A visitor centre is open on a limited schedule, often daytime and closed some days or in winter. Clifton Observatory, with its camera obscura and cave, keeps its own seasonal hours and charges; check before walking up. Organised events, such as bridge climbs, abseils or bungee jumps, are not guaranteed and run only on set dates. The bridge can close to traffic and walkers for events, maintenance or weather.
