Coconut Grove
Heritage District · Miami, Florida
Miami's oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhood, settled from the 1870s by Bahamian labourers and New England intellectuals who arrived within a few years of each other and built two quite separate villages that eventually became one. It kept its tree canopy, its peacocks and a good deal of its independence, and it was a city in its own right until Miami annexed it in 1925.

A public neighbourhood, open always. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours; the village is liveliest in the evening.
