Colonial Williamsburg
Heritage District · Williamsburg, Virginia
The capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, restored from 1926 onward with John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s money into the largest living-history museum in the world. The Historic Area is 301 acres holding 88 original eighteenth-century buildings and several dozen careful reconstructions, worked by costumed interpreters and by tradespeople who genuinely make things — the blacksmiths forge, the printers print, the wigmaker makes wigs.
