Colosseum

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Historic Centre Of Rome, 1980); Parco Archeologico Del Colosseo, Ministero Della Cultura · Rome, Lazio

The largest amphitheatre ever built and the most visited monument in Italy: an ellipse of travertine 189 metres long and 50 high, begun under Vespasian around AD 70 on the drained lake of Nero's palace and opened by Titus in 80 with a hundred days of games. It held somewhere above fifty thousand people on numbered tiers, fed through eighty arches in minutes, and staged gladiator fights and animal hunts above a two-level basement of lifts and cages that is now open to visitors. Earthquakes and a thousand years of quarrying took the south wall and the marble, which is why one side stands to the attic and the other to the second tier. The whole park with the Roman Forum and the Palatine logs about fifteen million entries a year on one ticket, and since 2024 every ticket is nominative, checked against ID, released thirty days ahead and gone within hours for the arena floor and the underground. A single visit is capped at 75 minutes inside. It is smaller and emptier than the postcards suggest and it still stops people dead when they come up out of the metro and see it.
