Columbia State Historic Park

State Park · Columbia, California

Columbia State Historic Park is a Gold Rush town preserved in the Sierra foothills of Tuolumne County, a few minutes from Sonora off Highway 49. It is often called the Gem of the Southern Mines, and its rows of brick buildings with iron shutters survived because they were built after wooden towns burned. The historic part of Main Street is closed to cars - confirm - so you walk a dusty street past a working blacksmith, an old-time candy kitchen, a saloon, a hotel and a theatre - confirm which are open. Stagecoach rides, gold panning and costumed staff add atmosphere. Walking the town is free; the paid extras are rides, panning and tours - confirm prices. It suits families, history fans and photographers. Be honest about the limits: it is small, the foothills are hot in summer, weekends and school trips crowd the street by midday, and some shops close on weekdays out of season. Allow three to four hours.

The park grounds and streets are normally open every day of the year, with no gate, but the buildings keep their own hours. Shops, the museum and the blacksmith commonly open from about 10 AM and close between 4 and 5 PM, with shorter days and some closures in winter - confirm with California State Parks or the individual business. The stagecoach, gold panning and mine tours run on set schedules that are fuller in summer and on weekends. The City Hotel and the Fallon House Theatre keep separate hours and show schedules - confirm before building a day around either. The parking lots at the edge of town are usually open all day; expect little shade in summer.
