Columbus Architecture District
Modern Architecture · Columbus, Indiana
A town of about fifty thousand in southern Indiana holding one of the densest concentrations of significant modern architecture anywhere in the world, the result of a programme begun in the 1950s by the Cummins Engine Foundation, which offered to pay the architect's fee for any public building in the county provided the town chose from a list of first-rank designers. Eliel and Eero Saarinen, I. M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, Harry Weese, Kevin Roche, Cesar Pelli, Deborah Berke and Gunnar Birkerts all built here, and several of the buildings are National Historic Landmarks. The American Institute of Architects has ranked Columbus sixth in the United States for architectural innovation and design.
