Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area

State Park · Colusa, California

Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area sits on the bank of the Sacramento River in the town of Colusa, in the rice and orchard country of the Sacramento Valley. It is a small, shady riverside park under cottonwoods and willows, with a campground and a boat ramp - confirm campsite count, season and ramp conditions - and it is used above all by anglers and boaters. The river holds striped bass, sturgeon and catfish, with salmon runs in some seasons - confirm rules and licences - and there is a flat levee walk with views of the river bend, the orchards and the nearby wildlife refuges for migrating waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. Summers here often pass 100 F and bring heavy mosquitoes, while winter brings tule fog and occasional flooding. Currents are swift and swimming is not advised. It is a good fit for fishing trips and quiet camping, and it is not a park for long hikes, big views or a beach day on the river.

California State Parks has generally run this recreation area as a day-use park from around sunrise to sunset, with the campground on its own check-in and check-out times and the boat ramp open for launching during daylight - confirm the hours, the fee for day use and camping, and whether a kiosk or a pay station collects them. Winter storms can raise the river and flood the park, closing the ramp and campground for days or weeks, while summer heat and fire danger can limit activity. Tule fog in winter can reduce visibility on the roads at dawn. Check the State Parks page and river conditions on the day you go.
