Comala and the Volcán de Colima
Pueblo MáGico / VolcáN Activo · Comala, Colima
A town painted entirely white with red tile roofs, standing on a slope below one of the most active volcanoes in North America. Comala is a Pueblo Magico with an ordinance that keeps every building white, arcades around a green plaza, and a tradition where you order a drink and free food keeps arriving until you stop. It carries a name that means something enormous in Spanish-language literature: Juan Rulfo set Pedro Paramo in a fictional Comala, a town of ghosts and whispers, the novel that helped make magical realism possible. The real Comala is not that Comala, and locals will tell you so before you ask. Above it rise the Volcan de Fuego de Colima, about 3,820 m, and the older Nevado de Colima, over 4,200 m; the active cone is under an exclusion zone, so you look, you do not climb. Come for the plaza, the botanas and the volcano views on clear mornings. Plan a half day here, and stay in Colima city if you want a quiet night.
