A Stop For Aviation Fans On The Trans Canada Highway, With A Real Flying Heritage Of The Prairies · Brandon, Manitoba

The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum occupies a hangar at the Brandon Municipal Airport on the south side of Brandon, Manitoba, about 200 km west of Winnipeg beside the Trans-Canada Highway. It tells the story of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, the huge scheme that trained well over 130,000 airmen and airwomen in Canada during the Second World War, with training schools spread across the prairies, including a major station at Brandon. Inside are restored training aircraft, such as Avro Ansons and other trainers (confirm which are on show), along with uniforms, flight gear, photographs, logbooks, models and archives that follow a recruit from enlistment to wings. Volunteers, some with ties to the air force, often guide visitors and share stories. The museum suits aviation fans and families, and it fits a stop on a prairie road trip. Brandon itself has hotels, restaurants and museums a short drive away.

The museum is open all year in some form, with longer hours in summer and shorter hours or fewer days in winter. I cannot give exact times, so confirm opening days and hours by phone or on the museum notices before you drive. Summer hours commonly run daily from about mid morning to late afternoon, while winter may be reduced to certain weekdays and a Saturday. Admission is charged, with lower rates for children, seniors and families. Volunteer guides are available at busy times. Airport access roads are open at any hour, but the hangar is closed outside museum hours, and special events such as air shows or reunions can change normal hours.
