Confederation Bridge

Confederation Bridge (Federal Crossing Operated By Strait Crossing Bridge Ltd.) · Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island

Confederation Bridge is a bridge of about 13 km that links Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island, to Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, across the Northumberland Strait. It is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered water. It opened on 31 May 1997 and replaced the car ferry on this route, and a drive across takes roughly ten to twelve minutes. The roadway curves gently and rises to a high span so ships can pass beneath, and the piers carry ice shields built to break up winter pack ice. For most visitors this is the way into PEI by car, so the visit is mainly a drive, plus a photograph from the shore. The toll is collected when you leave PEI, not on the way in (confirm current rates). Pedestrians and cyclists may not cross on their own and must use the bridge shuttle, and high winds can restrict motorcycles and tall vehicles. The best views are from Cape Jourimain on the New Brunswick side and the waterfront at Borden-Carleton, so allow an hour or two if you want more than the crossing.

Gateway Village, Borden-Carleton, Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island, C0B 1X0, Canada

The bridge is open 24 hours a day, year round, for vehicles, but it can restrict or close traffic in high winds, storms and ice events, so motorcycles, RVs, trailers and other high-sided vehicles should check conditions before they set out. The toll is paid when leaving PEI, and booths and traffic flow run all day with busy periods on summer weekends and holidays. Pedestrians and cyclists must use the shuttle, whose operating hours and fee should be confirmed with the bridge operator. Visitor facilities at Gateway Village and the Cape Jourimain Nature Centre are seasonal, mainly late spring to autumn; confirm hours before you detour for them.
