A heritage railroad based at the yellow 1874 railroad station on the village green in North Conway, the old Boston and Maine depot with its twin towers and long platform. Since the 1970s the railroad has run restored diesel-hauled trains, and occasionally steam (confirm), on two old lines. The short Valley trains run south to Conway or north to Bartlett along the Saco River, round trips of roughly one to two hours that suit young children. The Notch train is the big one: most of a day on the old Maine Central Mountain Division, climbing through Crawford Notch on ledges cut into the mountainside, across the Frankenstein Trestle and the Willey Brook Bridge to Crawford Depot at the top of the notch (confirm the current turnaround point). Passengers choose coach, first-class parlor seats, a glass-topped dome car or a dining car with a meal served on board (confirm which cars run). The station holds a small railroad museum, and behind it a roundhouse and turntable service the engines. Foliage trains sell out weeks ahead, and holiday trains run into December.
