Coorg
Kodagu District; Coffee Country Of The Western Ghats · Madikeri, Karnataka
A hilly district in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, officially Kodagu, known across India as a retreat of misty green hills, coffee and spice estates, waterfalls and forest. It is the home of the Kodava people, a martial community with their own language, dress and customs, and famous pork curry. Coorg has no single great sight; people come to stay on a coffee estate or in a homestay, walk the plantations, and slow down. The district town of Madikeri has a fort and Raja's Seat, a viewpoint over the valleys at sunset. Nearby are Abbey Falls, the Dubare elephant camp on the Kaveri river, and Talakaveri, the source of the Kaveri. At Bylakuppe, on the edge of the district, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India surrounds the Namdroling monastery, known as the Golden Temple. Treks lead to Tadiandamol, the highest peak, and into the Brahmagiri hills. Coorg is a weekend escape from Bengaluru, so weekends are busy. The monsoon is very heavy, and landslides have done serious damage in recent years.
