Coro and its Port

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Coro And Its Port (1993). Founded In 1527, The Earliest Surviving Spanish Colonial Settlement In Mainland South America, With Distinctive Earthen Construction (Barro And Tapia) Found Nowhere Else In Venezuela At This Scale; Adjoins The Medanos De Coro Dune Field On Its Outskirts · Coro, Falcon

Coro was founded in 1527 and is the earliest surviving Spanish colonial settlement on mainland South America, and what sets its old quarter apart from any other colonial centre in Venezuela is the construction itself: whole streets of houses built from barro and tapia, rammed and moulded earth rather than brick or stone, a technique that has required repeated and careful restoration over the centuries to survive. UNESCO inscribed Coro and its port, La Vela de Coro, together in 1993, recognising both the town itself and the harbour a short distance away that once handled its colonial trade. On the edge of town the Medanos de Coro, a field of shifting sand dunes, sits incongruously close to the historic streets - a genuine desert landscape a few minutes from colonial Spanish America. Coro's present-day international tourism circuit is thin compared to better-known UNESCO towns elsewhere in this database, which is most of why it sits where it does in this batch rather than higher.

Coro's old quarter and plazas can be walked at any daylight hour with no admission fee for the streets themselves. Individual historic buildings and any small museum keep ordinary daytime hours with a weekly rest day; confirm the current pattern locally. The Medanos de Coro dune field on the town's edge has no gate or fixed hours. La Vela de Coro, the historic port, is a short drive from the old quarter and can be visited independently of the town centre. Coro has its own small airport with domestic connections and is linked by road to Maracaibo and the rest of the country.
