Corona del Mar State Beach

State Park · Corona Del Mar, California

Corona del Mar State Beach sits in Newport Beach, Orange County, at the foot of the Ocean Boulevard bluffs, right beside the rock jetty that guards the entrance to Newport Harbor. Locals call it Big Corona. It is a wide, sheltered stretch of sand with gentle surf in most conditions, which makes it a favorite for families, bodyboarders and sunset watchers. Yachts and sailboats slip past the jetty, fire rings line parts of the sand (confirm), and the landscaped park on the bluff above, Inspiration Point, gives a broad ocean view. A calm cove tucked against the jetty rocks suits small children (confirm), and Little Corona, a smaller rocky beach with tide pools, lies a short distance away (confirm). The beach is popular and crowds build on summer weekends, the lot fills early, May and June bring a gray marine layer, and rip currents can run along the jetty. Crystal Cove State Park lies just south.

The beach has generally been open daily from early morning until late evening, with posted hours of about 6 AM to 10 PM - confirm the current hours, which can change by season and by city ordinance. It is run by the City of Newport Beach rather than directly by California State Parks, so state park passes may not apply to parking - confirm. Lifeguards are normally on duty in daylight hours in the warm months and fewer in winter - confirm the schedule. Restrooms and showers are usually available near the lot and may close for cleaning or repair. High surf, storm runoff that makes the water unsafe for swimming, and fire danger can change what is open on the day you go.
