Coronado National Memorial
National Memorial · Hereford, Arizona
A memorial in the Huachuca Mountains on the Mexican border commemorating the 1540-1542 expedition of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, the first major European expedition into the American Southwest, which probably passed along the San Pedro River valley seen below. A narrow mountain road climbs to Montezuma Pass at about 6,575 feet, with views into Mexico and across the San Rafael and San Pedro valleys. Trails lead to Coronado Peak and to Coronado Cave, an undeveloped cavern about 600 feet long that visitors explore with their own lights. The southern end of the Arizona Trail reaches the border here. Children can try on replica armour at the visitor centre.
