Cosala

A Quiet Colonial Mining Town Of Red Tiled Roofs, Cobbled Lanes And An Old Mining Museum, Set Among Green Hills, Known For Its Coffee And Its Yearly Local Fair. A Day Out Of Mazatlan For People Who Want A Cool Mountain Town. Roads Wind Through The Sierra · Cosala, Sinaloa

Cosala is a small Pueblo Magico in the foothills of the Sierra Madre in Sinaloa, about 120 km north-east of Mazatlan, reached by a winding mountain road. The town grew from silver and gold mining, and that history lives on in a small mining museum, old stone houses and a sleepy plaza surrounded by cobbled streets. A colonial church stands above the centre, coffee growers work the cooler slopes nearby, and the local bakery and mountain kitchens offer foods you will not find on the Mazatlan coast. A local fair brings music and crowds, but most days are quiet and hot in the afternoon. It suits travellers who like slow walks, small museums and mountain food, and who already have a car or tour in Mazatlan. It is worth the detour for a calm half day or an overnight; it is not worth it if you want nightlife or big sights, or in a rush. Check current Sinaloa travel advice and drive by day, then return before dark.
