Council Grove

National Historic Landmark District; Santa Fe National Historic Trail · Council Grove, Kansas

A Santa Fe Trail town of about two thousand people at the northern end of the Flint Hills, named for the 1825 council under an oak tree at which the Osage granted right of way across their land. It was the last place a wagon train could reliably refit before eight hundred miles of open country, and an unusual amount of that survives — the Last Chance Store, the Kaw Mission, the Hays House restaurant of 1857, and the stump of the Council Oak itself.

207 West Main Street, Council Grove, Kansas, 66846, United States

A public historic district, walkable at any hour, with free outdoor sites and interpretive panels. Kaw Mission State Historic Site and the visitor centre keep daytime hours that contract in winter and are unreliable Sundays and Mondays. Hays House serves lunch and dinner; book at weekends.
