Country Club Plaza

Promenade · Kansas City, Missouri

Fifteen city blocks of shops, restaurants and apartments in Baroque and Moorish Revival architecture, built by the developer J.C. Nichols from 1923 and modelled on Seville - fountains, towers and tiled facades in the middle of Kansas City. It is generally credited as the first planned large outdoor suburban shopping centre in the United States, the first designed with parking for cars, the first with unified architecture and common management, and it is therefore the ancestor of essentially every shopping centre built since.

4750 Broadway Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri, 64112, United States

The streets are public and open at all hours. Shops generally 10 AM to 6 PM with later hours Thursday to Saturday; restaurants and bars run much later. THE PLAZA LIGHTS ARE SWITCHED ON AT THANKSGIVING and burn every night until mid-January, which is the busiest and most-photographed period of the year and worth planning around in either direction.
