Country Music Highway

Kentucky Country Music Highway — US 23 · Paintsville, Kentucky

The stretch of US 23 running roughly 144 miles down the eastern edge of Kentucky from Greenup County to the Virginia line, designated in 2002 because an improbable number of country and bluegrass musicians came from the counties it passes through. Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, the Judds, Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, Keith Whitley, Tom T. Hall, Billy Ray Cyrus and Chris Stapleton all grew up within a short drive of this road. It is a working four-lane highway through coal country rather than a scenic byway, and the reason to drive it is what is beside it.

US Highway 23, Paintsville, Kentucky, 41240, United States

A public highway, open at all hours, free, with no seasonal closures on the route itself. The museums, the state park, the theatre and Butcher Hollow along it each keep their own hours; several are small operations with reduced winter opening, and Loretta Lynn's homeplace is shown informally by the family. Check individually before travelling.
