Courmayeur and the Skyway Monte Bianco
Skyway Monte Bianco, A Two Stage Rotating Cable Car Opened In 2015 From Courmayeur To Punta Helbronner On The Italian Flank Of Mont Blanc · Courmayeur, Aosta Valley
Italy gets the good side of Mont Blanc. The French approach the mountain across a valley; Courmayeur sits directly under the south face, which is the steep one, and in 2015 a cable car opened that climbs from the valley floor to a terrace at well over three thousand metres in two stages, in rotating glass cabins that turn through a full circle as they go up. From the top you are looking across the Brenva glacier at the summit itself and down the other side into France. Below that, at the middle station, there is an alpine botanical garden and the start of the traverse that carries on by cable car to Chamonix, so you can go up in Italy and come down in another country. The village underneath is a proper old stone one with a guides' society going back to the 1850s, rather than a purpose-built resort, and it stays open in summer for walking when the ski season is finished. Go up in the morning, because the south face makes its own cloud and an afternoon terrace is an expensive nothing.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The structure is seasonal: the Skyway runs daily through the summer walking season and the winter ski season, with LONG MAINTENANCE CLOSURES in the shoulder months of roughly May and November, first ascent in the morning and last descent in the late afternoon, and it stops entirely in high wind. The Saussurea garden opens summer only. Village streets and the side valleys are public and never close. Confirm the season, the daily first and last cabins, and the wind status before travelling.
