Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair
Part Of The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (1982), Home To The Six Day Overland Track Between The Jagged Dolerite Peak Of Cradle Mountain And The Glacial Depths Of Lake St Clair, Australia'S Deepest Lake · Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair sits in Tasmania's central highlands, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and home to the six-day Overland Track between the jagged dolerite peak of Cradle Mountain and the glacial depths of Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest natural freshwater lake at around 200 metres. Most day visitors see only the northern end, where a short boardwalk circuit around Dove Lake delivers the single most photographed reflection in Tasmania, dolerite columns mirrored in still black water. Wombats graze in daylight on the button grass plains near Ronny Creek, often ignoring walkers passing within metres, while pademelons and wallabies gather at dusk near the visitor centre. The full Overland Track is a serious multi-day commitment booked through a capped seasonal system, not a casual add-on. Weather here turns within the hour regardless of season, and summer snow on exposed sections is not unusual. A ferry crosses Lake St Clair at the southern end for walkers finishing or starting there.

The park itself has no closing time, but the shuttle bus between the visitor centre and Dove Lake runs to a daytime timetable only, with shorter hours and a reduced service in winter. The visitor centre and cafe close in the late afternoon year-round. The Lake St Clair ferry runs a handful of scheduled crossings a day and needs a booking in peak season rather than a walk-up fare. The Overland Track operates a managed, dated booking season running roughly October to May, with a capped number of walkers starting each day; outside that window the track is open but unbooked, with huts first-come and far fewer services running. Snow can close the Dove Lake boardwalk or the access road with little warning in winter.
