Cradle of Forestry in America
Open Air Museum · Pisgah Forest, North Carolina
The site of the Biltmore Forest School, the first school of forestry in North America, founded in 1896 by Carl Alwin Schenck on George Vanderbilt's estate. Schenck taught practical forestry in the woods rather than the lecture hall, and the campus was a scatter of cabins and a schoolhouse in the forest. The land became part of Pisgah National Forest, and the 6,500-acre historic site now interprets where American forestry as a profession began.
