Craig Lake State Park
Michigan State Park · Champion, Michigan
Craig Lake State Park is a remote wilderness-style park in the Upper Peninsula near Champion, in Marquette and Baraga county country northwest of Marquette. It is a backcountry park of lakes, bogs and forest, reached by gravel roads that are rough in spring and closed or unplowed in winter, so confirm access before you drive. There are few facilities and no motorboats on the lakes, which gives paddlers and anglers quiet water. Rustic cabin and backcountry camping may be available by reservation, so confirm rules and booking with the Michigan DNR. Moose and wolves are possible in this region, but seeing one is luck, not a promise. Mosquitoes and black flies can be heavy from late spring into midsummer, and you must bring everything you need: water, food, maps, fuel and a plan for no cell coverage. It is for experienced, self-reliant visitors, not for a casual stop or a short detour from US-41.

The park is open year-round in principle, but access depends on the road and the season. Gravel approach roads may be soft in spring thaw and unplowed in winter, and winter visits require snow travel skills and a way to get in and out. There is no staffed gate that I can promise, so check with the Michigan DNR for current conditions, any reservation rules for cabins and backcountry sites, and whether a Recreation Passport is needed. Plan for daylight arrival, tell someone your route and return time, and carry a paper map. Services are far away; the nearest towns for fuel and food are in the Champion, Michigamme and Marquette area, so confirm opening hours there.
