Cranbrook House and Gardens

Historic House · Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Cranbrook House and Gardens is a quiet, elegant stop in Bloomfield Hills, north of Detroit. The house is the 1908 Arts and Crafts home of newspaper publisher George Booth, designed by Albert Kahn, and it sits at the centre of the Cranbrook Educational Community. Around it are about 40 acres of gardens, including a Greek theatre, a Japanese-style garden, pools and terraces, with Pewabic tile accents tucked into walls and fountains. The gardens are open seasonally, roughly spring to fall, and house tours run on set days, so confirm schedules and ticketing before you drive out. This is a place for slow walking, garden photography and architecture, not for thrills or large crowds. The Cranbrook Art Museum, Cranbrook Institute of Science and Saarinen House are separate sites on the wider campus and have their own hours and tickets. Parking is on campus. Wear shoes for walking on grass and gravel, and allow two to three hours for the house and gardens together.

The gardens are seasonal, commonly open from roughly spring to fall, usually in daytime hours, with winter closure or very limited access - confirm the opening and closing dates for the year before you travel. House tours run on selected days and times and may require advance tickets; some days the house is closed for private events, weddings or maintenance. The Cranbrook Art Museum, Institute of Science and Saarinen House have separate schedules and ticketing, so a visit to the gardens does not guarantee access to the rest of the campus. Check the current calendar for tours, special garden days, plant sales and closures before you plan the drive.
