Crater Lake National Park

National Park · Crater Lake, Oregon

The deepest lake in the United States (1,943 feet) fills the caldera of ancient Mount Mazama, which collapsed during a violent eruption 7,700 years ago. The stunningly blue water — fed only by rain and snowfall — is among the clearest and purest in the world.

Open 24 hours a day, year round, but ⚠ THE PARK IS FUNCTIONALLY TWO DIFFERENT PLACES DEPENDING ON THE MONTH. Rim Drive, the 33-mile road around the caldera, is normally fully open only from about July to October and is closed by snow the rest of the year; the North Entrance closes with it. The south and west entrances stay open all winter to Rim Village. THIS IS ONE OF THE SNOWIEST INHABITED PLACES IN AMERICA, averaging over 40 feet of snow a season, and snow can close roads in June and again in October. A per-vehicle entrance fee covers seven days. Check the park road status page the morning you travel rather than relying on a season.
