Crazy Horse Memorial
Memorial · Crazy Horse, South Dakota
A mountain carving of the Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, begun in 1948 and still under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills. It was commissioned by Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, who invited the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve it as an answer to Mount Rushmore twenty-five minutes up the road. Only the face is finished. The foundation has refused federal funding twice, which is the reason it has taken this long and the reason it is what it is.
12151 Avenue of the Chiefs, Crazy Horse, South Dakota, 57730, United States
Open daily year round, generally from morning until dusk with longer hours in summer; the complex stays open later than the light. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Ticketed, per person or per carload. ⚠ IT IS UNFINISHED AND WILL REMAIN SO FOR DECADES - only the face is complete. The NIGHT BLAST laser and fireworks shows run on summer evenings.
