Creek Street, Ketchikan

Historic Creek Street District, Ketchikan · Ketchikan, Alaska

A wooden boardwalk of colourful houses built on pilings over Ketchikan Creek, once the town's red-light district, where brothels operated from the early 1900s until they were closed in the 1950s. It was said to be the only place where both fish and fishermen went up the creek to spawn. Today the old houses hold galleries, gift shops and cafés, and Dolly's House Museum preserves the parlour and rooms of Dolly Arthur, one of its best-known residents. In August, pink and coho salmon crowd the creek beneath the boardwalk, and seals and eagles follow them in from the harbour. A short funicular climbs from the boardwalk to the Cape Fox Lodge on the hill above. It lies a short walk from the cruise docks, so it is busiest when ships are in port. Dolly's House charged $10, cash only, and opened about 10 AM-6 PM in summer.
