Creole Nature Trail

All American Road · Lake Charles, Louisiana

A hundred and eighty miles of road looping south from Lake Charles through the marshes of Cameron Parish to the Gulf and back, designated an All-American Road and marketed locally as Louisiana's Outback. It runs through four national wildlife refuges, past alligators lying on the verge, and along twenty-six miles of undeveloped Gulf beach you can drive onto. It is also a landscape that has been hit by two catastrophic hurricanes in fifteen years and rebuilt each time, and the services along it are thinner than the map suggests.

Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, Lake Charles, Louisiana, 70601, United States

A public highway network, open at all hours and free, including the national wildlife refuges, the Cameron ferry and the beaches. The Adventure Point orientation centre at Sulphur and the refuge visitor centres keep daytime hours and some close on Mondays. SERVICES, FUEL AND FOOD IN CAMERON PARISH ARE SPARSE — fill up in Lake Charles or Sulphur. Roads flood and sections close in storms and high tides; check conditions before driving, particularly in hurricane season from June to November.
