The oldest continuously operating art museum in the American West, opened to the public in Sacramento in 1885 in a Victorian Italianate mansion built for a railroad lawyer. A large modern wing was added in 2010 and tripled the space, so the visit runs from ornate nineteenth-century picture galleries straight into a white cube.
