Crosby Arboretum
Arboretum · Picayune, Mississippi
Mississippi State University's native plant arboretum at Picayune, sixty-odd acres of interpretive site inside several hundred more of natural areas, restoring and displaying the piney woods, savanna and wetland of the Pearl River basin — the ecosystem that covered this part of the South before the timber industry removed it. It is managed with prescribed fire, which is unusual for a public garden and is the whole point. At the centre, over a pond, stands the Pinecote Pavilion, designed by E. Fay Jones in 1986 and one of the most admired small buildings in American architecture.
