Cross in the Woods Shrine

Shrine · Indian River, Michigan

Cross in the Woods is a Catholic shrine, formally Our Lady of the Woods, in Indian River in Cheboygan County, northern Michigan, on M-68 close to I-75. It is dominated by a redwood crucifix about 55 feet tall, billed as the world's largest crucifix, which is a commonly stated claim and not one to quote as fact. The grounds hold outdoor Stations of the Cross and a Spiritual Garden, plus a doll museum on site; confirm what is open. In summer there are outdoor Masses. The shrine is open to people of all faiths, entry is free with donations welcome, and visitors are asked to dress modestly and keep quiet. It is a short stop, about an hour, and season runs roughly spring to fall. Burt Lake and Mullett Lake are close, and Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 35 to 40 minutes north. Confirm hours and Mass times first. It suits pilgrims, curious drivers and families wanting a quiet break from I-75, and it is not a full-day destination.

The shrine grounds are generally open to visitors through the daylight hours, with the busiest season running roughly spring to fall, and the grounds are typically open year-round from dawn to dusk. The doll museum, gift shop and Spiritual Garden are seasonal, and they are the first things to close in cold months, so confirm what is open before a long drive. Outdoor Masses are held in summer on set days and times that change by year; ask the shrine or check its schedule. In winter, northern Michigan snow can make the paths hard going and the wooded Stations may be icy. The crucifix itself can be seen from the clearing at any time the gate is open.
