Cross Ranch State Park
Subnational Park · Center, North Dakota
Five hundred and sixty-nine acres on the west bank of the Missouri south of Washburn, along one of the last stretches of the river that has never been dammed, channelled or straightened. The water here runs as Lewis and Clark saw it, through cottonwood gallery forest and sandbars, and the state park sits against The Nature Conservancy's 6,000-acre Cross Ranch Preserve, which carries a herd of more than two hundred bison on native mixed-grass prairie.
1403 River Road, Center, North Dakota, 58530, United States
Open year round with a per-vehicle North Dakota state park entry fee. The campground, cabins and nature centre are seasonal and reservable through the state park system, though the cabins are heated and winter use is encouraged. Trails are open all year and are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. ⚠ THE ADJOINING CROSS RANCH PRESERVE IS THE NATURE CONSERVANCY'S LAND with its own access rules, its own trails and a live bison herd, and dogs are not permitted on it - check the Conservancy's guidance separately from the park's.
