Crowley's Ridge State Park
Arkansas State Park On The Homestead Site Of Benjamin Crowley, The Settler The Ridge Is Named For. Built By The Civilian Conservation Corps In The 1930s, With Its CCC Structures On The National Register Of Historic Places. · Walcott, Arkansas
This is where Crowley's Ridge gets its name: Benjamin Crowley settled here in the 1820s, and the state park sits on his homestead with the family cemetery still on the grounds. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the park in the 1930s and their stone and timber work - the pavilion, the bathhouse, the walls and steps - is on the National Register and still in daily use. Lake Ponder sits at the bottom of the hollow with pedal boats on it in season. What makes it worth the detour is the forest: beech, oak and tulip poplar on loess soil, which belongs in the Appalachians rather than in eastern Arkansas.
