Crystal Bridges is an American art museum built in a wooded ravine in north-west Arkansas, endowed by Alice Walton and designed by Moshe Safdie as a chain of copper and glass pavilions bridging two spring-fed ponds. It opened in 2011 with a collection assembled quickly and expensively - Asher Durand's Kindred Spirits, Gilbert Stuart's full-length George Washington, Norman Rockwell's Rosie the Riveter, Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed - and hung as one continuous walk through five centuries of American art, from colonial portraits to the present day. Admission to that collection is free and permanently endowed, which changes how a visit works: there is no ticket to buy and no reason to hurry. Outside, a hundred and twenty acres of Ozark woodland hold several miles of trail, large outdoor sculpture, a James Turrell skyspace and a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house moved here from New Jersey and rebuilt. The trails run straight into Bentonville's greenway and mountain-bike network.

Open daily except one weekday - historically Tuesday - with a late evening one or two nights a week. The grounds, trails and outdoor sculpture open earlier and close later than the galleries and are free at all hours. The Momentary, the museum's contemporary arm in a converted cheese plant a couple of miles away, keeps separate hours. Confirm the closed day before travelling; people drive four hours and find the doors locked.
