Cuiabá
Capital Of Mato Grosso, Founded 1719 In The Gold Rush, And The Gateway To The Northern Pantanal And Chapada Dos GuimarãEs · Cuiabá, Mato Grosso
Cuiabá is the capital of Mato Grosso, founded in 1719 when gold was found in the rivers here, and it is one of the hottest cities in Brazil, with afternoons that regularly climb to punishing temperatures in the dry season. To be honest, most travellers spend one night here: it is the airport and supply town for the northern Pantanal along the Transpantaneira road and for the cliffs and waterfalls of Chapada dos Guimarães. Still, a day is not wasted. The small historic centre keeps a few old streets and churches, including the hilltop Igreja do Bom Despacho, among modern avenues. Down by the river, the Museu do Rio and the old port area tell the story of the Rio Cuiabá, and the food is the real draw: river fish such as pacu, pintado and piraputanga, cooked as mojica stew, grilled ribs or fried, with banana and farofa. The Arena Pantanal was built for the 2014 World Cup. Parque Mãe Bonifácia offers shaded trails in the cerrado. Locals also point to a marker for the claimed geodesic centre of South America, and dance to rasqueado, the local music.
Centro Histórico and the Cuiabá river, Cuiabá, MT, Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil
The city runs early because of the heat: shops, markets and offices get going in the morning, slow down in the hottest hours after lunch, and life moves outdoors again after sunset. Churches open for services and short visiting windows, mostly in the morning and late afternoon. The Museu do Rio and other small museums usually open Tuesday to Sunday with shorter weekend hours and close on Mondays - confirm current days. The riverside market works mainly in the morning. Parque Mãe Bonifácia is open from early morning to early evening and is busiest at dawn and dusk, when runners avoid the sun. The Arena Pantanal opens for matches and events rather than regular tours. Pantanal and Chapada trips leave early; lodges along the Transpantaneira need bookings, often weeks ahead in the dry season, and a car or transfer arranged in advance. Chapada dos Guimarães national park trails may require a registered guide and close in bad weather or high fire risk - confirm.
