Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
National Historical Park · Middlesboro, Kentucky
The one natural break in two hundred miles of the Cumberland Mountains, and the passage through which something like two or three hundred thousand settlers walked west between 1775 and 1810 after Daniel Boone marked the Wilderness Road through it. The park covers around 24,000 acres across Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee, with the headquarters, the visitor centre and the highway tunnel on the Kentucky side. The gap itself was restored in the 1990s: the modern road was buried in a tunnel under the mountain and the pass was returned to something close to how the settlers found it.
