A Popular Hiking, Trail Running And Weekend Escape For City People, In Thin Cold Air, With Fog And Storms In The Rainy Season. Ride Share And Local Microbus Access · Tlalpan, Ciudad de México

Cumbres del Ajusco National Park, declared in 1936, covers the high southern ridge of Mexico City. The highest point is the Pico del Aguila at about 3,930 m, with Cruz del Marques and Cerro Xitle among the other summits. The park's pine forest and open grassland above the basin give wide views over the city on clear mornings. The usual approach is the winding road from Tlalpan, by car or local microbus, and the trails attract hikers and trail runners at weekends. It suits fit walkers, runners and families who want a high-altitude escape without leaving the capital. It is worth the effort for clear-day views and cold air. It is not worth it in thick cloud or in afternoon storm season, when visibility drops and lightning is a real risk, or for anyone who dislikes cold wind and steep climbs. Thin air, cold winds and no water on the trails mean you must plan carefully and start at dawn, with a friend.

The park and its trails are open in daylight, and most hikers start early and finish by early afternoon. Gate staff and local communities control some access points and fees, which change, so confirm locally. Walking the public road and the lower viewpoints may be FREE, while parking, camping or access to community land usually carries a small charge. There are no fixed hours on the ridge, but trail access can be CLOSED in dangerous weather, fire season or for conservation work. Food stalls near the road open mainly on weekends.
